Description
A vulnerability was identified in NousResearch hermes-agent up to 2026.4.16. This impacts the function execute_code of the file tools/code_execution_tool.py of the component Environment Variable Handler. Such manipulation leads to sandbox issue. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploit is publicly available and might be used. The vendor was contacted early about this disclosure but did not respond in any way.
A vulnerability exists in NousResearch Hermes Agent versions through 2026.4.16, specifically within the 'execute_code' function of the Environment Variable Handler component. This issue allows for remote code execution by bypassing the application's approval process for executing potentially dangerous commands. The vulnerability arises from inadequate sanitization of environment variables, which enables sensitive credentials to leak into sandboxed subprocesses. The problem is exacerbated by the fact that the 'execute_code' tool is enabled by default and can be exploited without any user interaction.
Users can update to Hermes Agent version 2026.4.23 or later, where this vulnerability has been patched.
