CVE-2026-92811 Details
Description
browserless versions 1.44.0 through 2.56.7 fail to enforce file protocol restrictions in Playwright websocket endpoints, allowing authenticated token holders to read arbitrary files. Attackers can navigate Playwright-driven browsers to file scheme URLs and access files accessible to the container process despite the ALLOW_FILE_PROTOCOL setting defaulting to false.
A vulnerability exists in browserless versions 1.44.0 through 2.56.7, where file protocol restrictions are not properly enforced in Playwright WebSocket endpoints. This oversight allows authenticated token holders to read arbitrary files from the container's filesystem. Although the ALLOW_FILE_PROTOCOL setting is disabled by default, the lack of enforcement in Playwright routes creates a security risk. The issue arises because the file protocol check is only implemented for Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP) routes, leaving Playwright routes unprotected.
Users can update to a version of browserless where this vulnerability has been addressed.
