Description
Improper link resolution in the recursive file pull feature of the LXD CLI client in Canonical LXD versions 4.0.2 up to 6.9 (fixed in 4.0.14, 5.0.10 and 5.21.8) on Linux allows an attacker with root access inside a virtual machine to write attacker-controlled files or directory trees to arbitrary paths on the client host, with the operator's privileges. The attacker does this by using a modified lxd-agent that returns inconsistent SFTP directory listings and Lstat results.
A vulnerability exists in the LXD CLI client of Canonical LXD, specifically in versions 4.0.2 prior to 6.9, with the exception of 4.0.14, 5.0.10, and 5.21.8, on Linux. This vulnerability allows an attacker with root access inside a virtual machine to write files or directory trees, controlled by the attacker, to arbitrary paths on the client host, using the privileges of the operator. The exploitation involves a modified lxd-agent that provides inconsistent SFTP directory listings and Lstat results, which the LXD client fails to properly validate.
Users can avoid this vulnerability by not using 'lxd file pull -r' from untrusted virtual machines, or by running the command as an unprivileged user into a dedicated directory.
