Description
pypdf is a free and open-source pure-python PDF library. Prior to 6.15.0, a crafted PDF can cause long runtimes and large memory consumption when pypdf/_font.py function Font._collect_cid_character_widths expands unusually large CID font /W width ranges or excessive width entries during text extraction. This issue is fixed in 6.15.0.
A denial-of-service vulnerability has been identified in pypdf, a pure-Python PDF library, in versions prior to 6.15.0. The issue arises when a crafted PDF is processed, leading to excessive memory usage and prolonged execution times. This occurs specifically in the pypdf/_font.py file, within the Font._collect_cid_character_widths function. The vulnerability is triggered during text extraction when the font's CID width ranges contain unusually large values or excessive entries.
Users can upgrade to pypdf version 6.15.0 or later to address this vulnerability.
