Description
In OpenStack Ironic Python Agent through 11.6.0, a project-scoped user with the manager role can achieve arbitrary code execution on a running Ironic-Python-Agent via a maliciously constructed configuration, because the value of ntp_server is passed to a shell.
A vulnerability allowing arbitrary code execution has been identified in OpenStack Ironic Python Agent versions 6.0.0 prior to 10.2.3, 11.0.0 prior to 11.2.1, 11.3.0 prior to 11.5.1, and 11.6.0. This issue arises because the ntp_server configuration option is passed to a shell command without proper sanitization. The command is executed as root early in the Ironic Python Agent workflow, enabling an attacker to execute arbitrary commands with root privileges. The vulnerability can be exploited by a project-scoped user with the manager role, particularly in deployments with mDNS support enabled.
Users can update to Ironic Python Agent versions 11.6.0, 2025.1, 2025.2, or 2026.1 to address this vulnerability. For those using the 2024.1 or 2023.1 branches, patches are available but not actively maintained.
