CVE-2026-64597 Details
Description
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: smb: client: fix double-free in SMB2_close() replay A response-bearing attempt can return a replayable error and free its response buffer. If SMB2_close_init() fails before the next send, cleanup retains the previous buffer type and frees that response again. Reset response bookkeeping before each attempt to prevent the stale free.
A double-free vulnerability has been identified in the Linux kernel's SMB2 client implementation. This issue arises in the response handling of the SMB2_close() function. When a response-bearing attempt encounters a replayable error, it frees the associated response buffer. If the initial closure command fails before the next transmission, the cleanup process mistakenly retains the previous buffer type and frees it again, leading to a double-free scenario. This vulnerability affects the Linux kernel stable tree.
Users can upgrade to the latest version of the Linux kernel stable tree, where this vulnerability has been addressed.
