CVE-2026-64344 Details
Description
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: USB: idmouse: fix use-after-free on disconnect race mutex_unlock() may access the mutex structure after releasing the lock and therefore cannot be used to manage lifetime of objects directly (unlike spinlocks and refcounts). [1][2] Use a kref to release the driver data to avoid use-after-free in mutex_unlock() when release() races with disconnect(). [1] a51749ab34d9 ("locking/mutex: Document that mutex_unlock() is non-atomic") [2] 2b9d9e0a9ba0 ("locking/mutex: Clarify that mutex_unlock(), and most other sleeping locks, can still use the lock object after it's unlocked")
A use-after-free vulnerability has been identified in the USB Idmouse driver of the Linux kernel. This issue arises when the driver data is released via a mutex unlock operation, which can inadvertently access the mutex structure after the lock has been released. Such behavior creates a race condition that the mutex cannot manage properly, unlike spinlocks or reference counts. The vulnerability occurs in the USB Idmouse driver when the 'release' function races with the 'disconnect' event, leading to a premature deallocation of driver data. As a result, the 'mutex_unlock' operation can be exploited, causing a use-after-free scenario that may be manipulated for unintended consequences.
The vulnerability has been addressed in the Linux kernel by modifying the Idmouse driver to use a reference counting mechanism (kref) for managing the lifetime of driver data. Users should upgrade to the latest version of the Linux kernel where this fix has been applied.
