A memory exhaustion vulnerability has been identified in the Websockets library, specifically in versions prior to 8.21.1. The issue resides in the fragment handling of WebSocket messages, where the fragment guard only activates once the maximum fragment count is reached. This flaw allows attackers to deplete server memory by sending incomplete, fragmented WebSocket messages. Each fragment is stored as a separate Buffer object, leading to significant memory overhead and causing a denial-of-service condition through heap exhaustion.
Users can update to Websockets version 8.21.1 or later, where this vulnerability has been addressed.
