Description
NATS Server is a high-performance server for NATS.io, the cloud and edge native messaging system. Prior to 2.14.3 and 2.12.12, an authenticated MQTT client could subscribe to the internal $MQTT.deliver.pubrel subject family, bypassing configured subscribe permissions and exposing MQTT QoS2 protocol metadata for sessions in the account. This issue is fixed in versions 2.14.3 and 2.12.12.
A vulnerability exists in NATS Server versions prior to 2.14.3 and 2.12.12, allowing authenticated MQTT clients to subscribe to internal delivery subjects. This bypasses configured permissions and exposes Quality of Service (QoS) level 2 metadata for sessions within the account, although message payloads remain protected. The issue arises from incomplete restrictions on internal MQTT subjects, particularly for clients whose standard subscribe permissions do not grant access to these subjects.
Users can upgrade to NATS Server versions 2.14.3 or 2.12.12 to address this vulnerability.
