Description
The input file does not need to be strictly in a structurally valid PDF format. Instead, after reviewing the content, the original document disguised as a PDF will be sent to the parser. Malicious documents will construct malicious external entities that, through the protocol, point to local paths, thereby allowing access to any local files within the user's permission range.
A vulnerability exists in Foxit PDF Reader and Foxit PDF Editor for Windows and Mac, specifically in versions prior to 2026.1.2. This vulnerability allows crafted documents, particularly XDP files disguised as PDFs, to create malicious external entities. These entities can be exploited to access local files within the user's permission range. The issue arises because the application does not properly validate or restrict external entity resolution in its XML parsing, leaving it open to exploitation.
Users can update to Foxit PDF Reader or Foxit PDF Editor version 2026.1.2. Instructions for updating are available on the Foxit website.
