Description
Heap-based buffer overflow in Windows NTFS allows an authorized attacker to elevate privileges locally.
A heap-based buffer overflow vulnerability has been identified in the Windows NTFS file system. This vulnerability allows an authorized attacker to elevate privileges locally. It affects several versions of Windows, including various releases of Windows 10, Windows 11, Windows Server 2012, 2016, 2019, 2022, and 2025. The vulnerability arises from a heap-based buffer overflow, which can be exploited to gain higher privileges than originally assigned.
Users can apply the security update KB5099538 for Windows Server 2019, KB5099539 for Windows 10 versions 21H2 and 22H2, and KB5101649 for Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 26H1. For Windows Server 2022, the security update is also available. Instructions for downloading these security updates can be found on the Microsoft Update Catalog.
