Description
Uncontrolled Recursion (CWE-674) in Elasticsearch can lead to a denial of service via Excessive Allocation (CAPEC-130). An authenticated user can submit a specially crafted query that causes excessive resource consumption while the request is processed, which may render the affected node unavailable.
A denial-of-service vulnerability has been identified in Elasticsearch versions 8.0.0 prior to 8.19.16 and in the 9.x release line up to and including 9.4.2, as well as 9.3.5. This vulnerability arises from uncontrolled recursion, allowing an authenticated user to submit specially crafted queries that cause excessive resource consumption. As a result, the affected node may become unavailable.
Users can upgrade to Elasticsearch versions 8.19.17, 9.3.6, or 9.4.3 to address this vulnerability. For those unable to upgrade, no workarounds are available.
