Description
OpenClaw before 2026.5.2 contains an environment variable injection vulnerability where workspace .env STATE_DIRECTORY could influence bundled runtime dependency roots. Attackers can manipulate the STATE_DIRECTORY variable to load runtime dependencies from unintended local paths, potentially executing malicious code during dependency resolution.
A vulnerability exists in OpenClaw versions prior to 2026.5.2, allowing for environment variable injection that could influence the roots of bundled runtime dependencies. By manipulating the STATE_DIRECTORY variable in the workspace .env file, attackers could redirect dependency loading to unintended local paths. This misdirection could potentially lead to the execution of malicious code during the process of resolving dependencies.
Users are advised to avoid opening untrusted workspace environment files before installing runtime dependencies, until the patch is applied. As a general precaution, keep channel and tool allowlists narrow, avoid sharing one Gateway between mutually untrusted users, and disable the affected feature when not needed.
