A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's Ceph filesystem implementation can cause a kernel crash due to a stale blob size in extended attributes. This issue arises after the 'required_blob_size' computation is moved before the 'build_xattrs' function call, creating a race condition. The 'build_xattrs' function can release and reacquire a lock, during which time a newer metadata server (MDS) blob may be introduced, increasing the size of the attribute tree. The subsequent size check can then incorrectly pass, leading to a buffer underflow error. This vulnerability has been observed to crash the kernel, as demonstrated by the generic/642 test case.
Users can apply the latest patches available in the Linux kernel stable tree to address this vulnerability.
