CVE-2026-5172 Details
Description
A buffer overflow in dnsmasq’s extract_addresses() function allows an attacker to trigger a heap out-of-bounds read and crash by exploiting a malformed DNS response, enabling extract_name() to advance the pointer past the record’s end.
A buffer overflow vulnerability has been identified in dnsmasq versions prior to 2.92rel2, specifically within the extract_addresses() function. This vulnerability allows attackers to trigger a heap out-of-bounds read, leading to a crash of the dnsmasq process. The issue arises when a malformed DNS response is processed, causing the extract_name() function to advance the pointer beyond the end of the record.
Users can upgrade to dnsmasq version 2.92rel2 to address this vulnerability.
