CVE-2026-50261 Details
Description
A use-after-free flaw was found in the X.Org X server and Xwayland in SyncChangeCounter(). A client that sets up multiple SyncCounters can trigger a use-after-free when destroying those counters via a second client connection while changing those counters. This may be used to crash the server, or for privilege escalation if the X server runs as root.
A use-after-free vulnerability has been identified in the X.Org X server and Xwayland, specifically in the SyncChangeCounter function. This flaw allows a client that establishes multiple SyncCounters to trigger a use-after-free condition by destroying those counters through a second client connection while simultaneously modifying the counters. The vulnerability can lead to a server crash or, if the X server is running as root, privilege escalation.
Users can upgrade to X.Org X server version 21.1.23 or Xwayland version 24.1.12, both of which include the necessary fix.
