CVE-2026-50259 Details
Description
A stack-based buffer overflow flaw was found in the X.Org X server and Xwayland. _XkbSetMapChecks() declares a fixed-size stack buffer mapWidths[256] indexed by key type index. The helper function CheckKeyTypes() writes to this buffer at a client-controlled offset, allowing a stack buffer overflow. This may be used to crash the server, or for privilege escalation if the X server runs as root.
A stack-based buffer overflow vulnerability has been identified in the X.Org X server and Xwayland, affecting several versions prior to the latest security updates. The vulnerability arises in the _XkbSetMapChecks() function, which allocates a fixed-size stack buffer indexed by key type. The CheckKeyTypes() helper function can write to this buffer at a client-controlled offset, leading to a buffer overflow. This vulnerability can be exploited to crash the server or, if the X server is running as root, to escalate privileges.
Users can upgrade to X.Org X server version 21.1.23 or Xwayland version 24.1.12, both of which include the necessary fix. Instructions for updating can be found on the Red Hat Customer Portal.
