Description
The Linuxulator determined whether a binary was set-user-ID or set-group-ID by checking the P_SUGID process flag. During execve(2), this flag is not yet set at the point where the auxiliary vector is constructed, so AT_SECURE was incorrectly set to zero for set-user-ID and set-group-ID executables. An unprivileged local user can inject a shared library via LD_PRELOAD into a set-user-ID or set-group-ID Linux binary, gaining the privileges of that binary.
A vulnerability in the Linuxulator's handling of set-user-ID and set-group-ID binaries allows unprivileged local users to escalate privileges. The issue arises because the Linuxulator incorrectly sets the AT_SECURE flag in the ELF auxiliary vector during the execution of these binaries. This misconfiguration enables the injection of shared libraries via LD_PRELOAD, which are then executed with the privileges of the targeted binary.
Users can upgrade to a supported FreeBSD stable or release branch dated after the correction date. Instructions for updating via pkg, freebsd-update, or applying a source code patch are available in the FreeBSD Security Advisory.
