Description
Missing authentication for critical function in Microsoft Windows DNS allows an authorized attacker to perform tampering locally.
A vulnerability exists in Microsoft Windows DNS due to missing authentication for critical functions. This flaw allows an authorized attacker to locally manipulate DNS operations. The issue affects multiple Windows versions, including Windows 10 (various editions), Windows Server 2019, Windows Server 2022, and several Windows 11 releases. The vulnerability arises from inadequate authentication mechanisms, enabling unauthorized modifications to DNS processes by users with certain privileges.
Users can apply the security update corresponding to their Windows version. Security update KB5099539 is available for Windows 10 versions 22H2, 21H2, and 1809 (both 32-bit and x64-based systems). For Windows Server 2022, the security update KB5099540 can be applied. Windows Server 2019 users should also look for security update KB5099538. Windows 11 users can refer to security updates KB5101650 or KB5095051, depending on their system architecture and version.
