Description
Uncontrolled Resource Consumption (CWE-400) in Elasticsearch can lead to a denial of service via Excessive Allocation (CAPEC-130). An authenticated user can submit a specially crafted bulk request that causes sustained high CPU consumption, which can render the affected node unable to process requests.
A denial-of-service vulnerability has been identified in Elasticsearch versions 7.17.23 and prior, as well as in versions 8.0.0 through 8.14.0. This vulnerability arises from uncontrolled resource consumption, allowing an authenticated user to send a specially crafted bulk request that causes prolonged high CPU usage. As a result, the affected node may become unable to process requests, leading to service disruption.
Users can upgrade to Elasticsearch versions 7.17.24 or 8.15.0 to address this vulnerability. For those unable to upgrade, no workarounds are available.
