Description
VMware ESX contains an out-of-bounds write vulnerability in the VMXNET3 virtual network adapter. A malicious actor with local administrative privileges on a virtual machine with VMXNET3 virtual network adapter may exploit this issue to execute code on the host. Non VMXNET3 virtual adapters are not affected by this issue.
A critical out-of-bounds write vulnerability has been identified in the VMXNET3 virtual network adapter of VMware ESX. This vulnerability allows a malicious actor with local administrative privileges on a virtual machine using the VMXNET3 adapter to execute code on the host. Other virtual network adapters are not affected.
Users can upgrade to VMware ESX versions 9.1.0.0200, 9.0.2.0100, or 8.0 U3k, all of which include the necessary patch. For VMware Cloud Foundation 5.x, an asynchronous patching guide is available. VMware Telco Cloud Platform users should refer to KB449886 for guidance.
