CVE-2026-45934 Details
Description
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: btrfs: fix EEXIST abort due to non-consecutive gaps in chunk allocation I have been observing a number of systems aborting at insert_dev_extents() in btrfs_create_pending_block_groups(). The following is a sample stack trace of such an abort coming from forced chunk allocation (typically behind CONFIG_BTRFS_EXPERIMENTAL) but this can theoretically happen to any DUP chunk allocation. All chunk allocation is ---truncated---
A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's Btrfs file system has been identified, where non-consecutive gaps in chunk allocation can lead to transaction aborts. This issue typically arises with forced chunk allocation, especially when the Btrfs experimental feature is enabled, but it can also affect any duplicated chunk allocation. The problem stems from a bug in the chunk allocation logic, which fails to properly account for overlapping pending extents, leading to an 'Object already exists' error and transaction abortion. The vulnerability can be reproduced by manipulating chunk allocations and introducing delays in the file system's cleaning process, creating a scenario where pending allocations overlap in a way that confuses the allocation logic.
Users can avoid this issue by ensuring that chunk allocations do not overlap pending extents, although this may require manual management of block group allocations.
