Description
Avahi is a system which facilitates service discovery on a local network via the mDNS/DNS-SD protocol suite. Prior to version 0.9-rc4, any unprivileged local user can crash avahi-daemon by sending a single D-Bus method call with conflicting publish flags. This issue has been patched in version 0.9-rc4.
A denial-of-service vulnerability has been identified in Avahi versions through 0.9-rc3. This issue allows any unprivileged local user to crash the avahi-daemon by sending a single D-Bus method call with conflicting publish flags. The vulnerability arises because the 'AVAHI_PUBLISH_USE_MULTICAST' and 'AVAHI_PUBLISH_USE_WIDE_AREA' flags, while individually accepted, are mutually exclusive. The 'transport_flags_from_domain' function enforces this exclusivity with an assertion, which, if failed, causes the daemon to abort, leading to a crash.
Users can upgrade to Avahi version 0.9-rc4 or later, where this vulnerability has been patched.
