Description
A heap-based buffer overflow vulnerability exists in the vtkDICOMItem::FindDataElementOrInsert functionality of vtk-dicom (version(s): 9.5.2). A specially crafted DICOM file can lead to heap-based memory corruption. An attacker can provide a malicious file to trigger this vulnerability.
A heap-based buffer overflow vulnerability has been identified in VTK-DICOM version 9.5.2. The issue arises in the 'vtkDICOMItem::FindDataElementOrInsert' function, where a specially crafted DICOM file can cause heap memory corruption. This vulnerability is triggered by an out-of-bounds write, which corrupts the metadata of heap chunks, potentially leading to arbitrary code execution.
Users are advised to update to the patched version of VTK-DICOM, which is available on the project's GitHub page.
