CVE-2026-16743 Details
Description
A flaw was found in accountsservice. The systemd-homed code path for SetIconFile opens a user-supplied filename as root without the validation and privilege drop performed by the classic handler. A local attacker with a systemd-homed-managed account can read arbitrary files accessible to the accounts-daemon process.
A vulnerability exists in accountsservice versions approximately 25.34.76 through 26.13.3, specifically within the systemd-homed integration. The issue arises in the handler for the D-Bus method 'SetIconFile', which allows local users with systemd-homed-managed accounts to manipulate files without proper validation. This flaw enables the accounts-daemon, running as root, to access and return the contents of sensitive files, such as '/etc/shadow', effectively leading to unauthorized privilege escalation.
The vulnerability has been fixed in accountsservice version 26.26.9. Users should update to this version to address the issue.
