CVE-2026-12610 Details
Description
A flaw was found in sssd. When authenticating with a YubiKey, the SSSD PAM responder can crash due to a use-after-free vulnerability, where a memory pointer is incorrectly handled. A local attacker could exploit this flaw by manipulating smartcard or YubiKey contents, leading to a denial of service that disrupts authentication. This vulnerability also presents a potential for privilege escalation, although it is difficult to exploit.
A use-after-free vulnerability has been identified in the SSSD (System Security Services Daemon) PAM (Pluggable Authentication Module) responder, specifically when authenticating with a YubiKey. This vulnerability arises from improper handling of a memory pointer, which can lead to a crash of the SSSD PAM responder. A local attacker could exploit this issue by manipulating the contents of a smartcard or YubiKey, causing a denial-of-service condition that disrupts authentication. Additionally, there is a potential for privilege escalation, although exploiting this aspect is considered difficult.
Users can configure the SSSD systemd service to automatically restart on failure, ensuring that authentication remains available even if the PAM responder crashes.
