This means that sometimes we can increase the refcount in `prepare_fb` and don't decrease it in `cleanup_fb`. The opposite can also be true. In fact, the struct drm_plane .state shouldn't be accessed directly but instead, the `drm_atomic_get_new_plane_state()` helper function should be used. So, we could stick to this check, but using `drm_atomic_get_new_plane_state()`. But actually, this check is not re ---truncated---
A use-after-free vulnerability has been identified in the Linux kernel's VC4 DRM (Direct Rendering Manager) module. This issue arises from improper management of reference counts in the handling of framebuffer states for video planes. When non-blocking commits are used, the kernel can issue a warning about a reference count underflow, indicating that a resource was freed while it was still in use. The vulnerability occurs because the code directly accesses the plane's state, leading to inconsistencies in reference count management. Although the 'prepare_fb' and 'cleanup_fb' functions are supposed to balance each other, the direct checks can allow reference counts to be incorrectly incremented or decremented, creating a use-after-free scenario.
Users can upgrade to the patched version of the Linux kernel available in the Linux kernel stable tree to address this vulnerability.
