CVE-2020-25900 Details
Description
HelloTalk through 3.4.1 stores full-precision GPS coordinates even when the user had intended to share only a country or city. Furthermore, these coordinates are placed into a database on the client of other users. (The client side was changed in 2019 to encrypt that database.)
A vulnerability in HelloTalk for Android, in versions through 3.4.1, allows for the unintentional sharing of full-precision GPS coordinates. Users who intended to share only their country or city had their exact location, accurate to approximately 0.11 meters, stored in an unencrypted local database on the client side. This over-disclosure of location data was not reflected in the user's public profile, creating a privacy risk by exposing precise home addresses to other users.
HelloTalk has since encrypted the local backup database in a release after the vulnerable version, but the underlying issue of server-side over-disclosure remains unaddressed.
